The month of October was overall sensational for fishing with some great captures, many billfish released and lots of entrants in the fishing competition. The billfish have continued to show up with angler Matt Gates getting two blues this week. The seas were rough and with just two crew onboard, they managed to bring one of the fish in to weigh at the end of the day. It was an impressive 200.8kg. There were many people down at the gantry and the fish was filleted up on the cleaning table for everyone. The flesh on the fish was in prime condition and much of it has been smoked, cured, cooked and eaten already! Interestingly the gut of the fish was full of small weird looking fish. We showed the baitfish to the scientists that were at the Ningaloo Research presentation at the EGFC clubhouse and they identified the fish and said that the small fish are found on the ocean floor in depths of about 500m.

Also this week, Bernie Vale, skipper of a charter boat that works from Coral Bay to the Monte's, tagged four blue marlin in one day. The four fish were all estimated at being over 200kg and they also hooked a fifth that dropped the hooks. It's certainly an exciting time for billfishing, especially the big fish.
Chris Chappell from Perth was fishing Oysters at the tip of the cape using an 85gm raider when a massive queenfish took a swipe at his lure. He landed the fish, while his brother Edward also caught a similar sized queeny. When queenfish are in schools they become competitive and sometimes they even try to take the lure out of the mouth of the hooked fish! The two brothers also got out on a charter boat during their stay with fellow angler Ian Fitch who caught some golden trevally.

The winner for the month of October was Jodie Holmes with her mackerel. All pictures can be sighted in store and if you've got a recent picture, then bring it in for the competition.
Meanwhile junior anglers Alex and Jack Dandy and their family have been getting stuck into the big squid in the lower gulf. One of them was so big that the tube was as long as Alex's arm! Now that's what we call BIG squid.
Also in the gulf this week was Sharon Aitken who caught the sensational trout pictured this week. Sharon and husband Tom were very appreciative of the fresh fish for dinner that week.
