Local angler Ben Knight caught a memorable fish last week. It was a black marlin. He has caught many before, but this one was tackled on fly gear. Ben was fishing on the boat Weapon when a marlin came into the spread of hookless lures. The skipper pulled the boat out of gear as the (7yr old) deckie teased in the fish close to the boat. Ben cast the fly in to the water and the marlin switched straight from the lure to the fly and snavelled it. After a short time, the fish was boatside and tagged. A few quick snaps were taken before the fly was removed from the corner of the jaw and the fish was released back to its playground.

A lucky angler holds one of the smaller wahoo caught off Helby Bank.

The dolphin fish and wahoo have been thick off Helby Bank with the 50 metre line producing the most bites. The wahoo have been rather sneaky and sometimes taking a few pushers out wide too. The caravan parks and the national park are filling with an influx of tourists enjoying the splendid fishing and weather the Westside has to offer. Spangled emperor have been the main stay with queenfish and golden trevally in for the measure to provide delight on light gear.

Bluewater staff member Suze Gerovich caught her first marlin this week along with her fiancée (she caught him too??? No, she was fishing with him!)Suze showed Taygen up for the day by catching two marlin to his one. Then that was closely followed by her first wahoo. Now, she’s out targeting sailfish....look out fish I say! She has well and truly caught the billfish bug with her anticipation levels at an all time high while she counts down her days to her next day off.

The garfish and whiting have been fishing well in the gulf with squid patrolling the weedy areas. There are whispers of blue manner crabs in the gulf, but last time we had reports people went out and couldn’t find them! If you do decide to try for a crab or two, don’t forget to take a small spin outfit as well to target the many species of fish that you can encounter in this using lures including mangrove jack, estuary cod, queenfish, trevally and don’t forget your squid jig!
