Bluewater Exmouth News May 7th 2009

Seppe Van Engelgem and his family are from NSW and are travelling around Australia. They came through Exmouth to attend the wedding of Ben Knight and Sascha O'Meara. Uncle Ben took Seppe out fishing off Bundegi using hardy heads for bait on light spinning outfits. Seppe, aged just seven yrs, caught fish nearly every cast!

The other staff at Bluewater Tackle World Exmouth, who bring you this report each week, wish Ben and Sascha the very best for their wedding day and hope that they have a great honeymoon in Vanuatu, with plenty of fish, cocktails and relaxation.

Queenfish have been showing up around the beaches at Bundegi for shore based anglers using lures such as Halco slices and Tango Dancers. Whiting have also been caught along the beaches south of the new ramp using prawns.

Leigh and Mase, are a couple of guys from VIC and are here for a few months holiday. They have been having some of the best experiences in their lives. They've been catching and releasing a variety of species including GT's, golden trevally, queenfish, red bass and billfish. Just this week the boys were travelling back from the islands in the gulf when they came across a bait school being harassed by northern bluefin tuna. The boys threw a popper into the school and to their surprise a sailfish popped up and grabbed the lure with barbless trebles. The excitement was high, but only lasted a short while as the fish jumped and spat the hooks.

Meanwhile there have been strong northerly winds of a morning, but backing off to glass in the afternoon. The fish seem to be biting better in the afternoons during this time, so perhaps a sleep-in or bit of gear maintenance is good for the mornings and a late afternoon fish into the evening is best.

The Exmouth Game Fishing Club was successful in its application to host the AIBT (Australian International Billfish Tournament) for 2011 and 2012. This event will need a great deal of effort from our community to showcase Exmouth at its best. We have already had offer to assists from members from other clubs such as Dampier, Broome and Perth and the tournament is expected to bring people from many places. It is also anticipated that many people will fly in and want to see what else is on offer in Exmouth from diving to trekking, scenic flights to tasting the fresh ocean delights.

The Exmouth Game Fishing Club AGM is on the 20th of May at the telecentre. If you would like to be a part of it all, or if you have any ideas, please contact club president Jeni Gates on 0408 905 448.
