Grant Rumble is in town on his break and has been out at every opportunity. He bought a new reel from the tackle store and caught a 71cm spangled emperor in the gulf using squid on his first drop. He has also been out on the west side targeting rankin cod and came across schools of dolphin fish feeding on white bait at the 100 metre mark. They caught the hungry dolphin fish on nothing but a hook in the water.
Bait balls have been present along the Wreck Road stretch with queenfish and trevally harassing them. Spangled emperor have been getting caught off the beaches and out in the deeper water. Small queenfish and small trevally have been taken in the marina early mornings and late afternoon along with some nice mangrove jacks later in the evenings. Whiting schools have been seen along the coast in the gulf.
There are about 70 boats entered into Gamex with about 350 anglers. Early reports have indicated up to 20 marlin being hooked each day - the majority of which have been small blacks. Exmouth staffer Ben Knight released an estimated 220kg black on 24kg spin tackle.
Spaniards have been a feature of Gamex so far.
Plenty of mackerel have been weighed, with a 32kg fish on 10kg notable. Several other big fish have been disqualified for rule breaches.
