Paul Rimmer from Paraburdoo has been fishing with his Dad John, along the west side in their 4.75m boat called 'Unreel.' They have been getting into some mackerel and a few cobia, while trolling bibbed minnows just out from Tantabiddi. They've also been fishing from the shore at Tantabiddi and getting some good sized spanglies and mangrove jacks. They've been using squid for bait and hardyheads when targeting the fish from the shore, and saying that the hardyheads are irresistible to the fish.
Paul with one of his cobia. Blake Benbow and his partner Tara came down from Karratha for the long weekend, and headed out to target billfish. Within the first hour's fishing just south of Tantabiddi in about 150m, they caught and tagged a 50kg black marlin. Another boat was fishing west of the northern Muiron Island in shallow water ranging from 20-50m. The crew reported raising eight sailfish, which is very interesting, because we have often wondered where the hoards of sailfish get to at this time of year, and perhaps it is these shallower waters. Congratulations must go to Brett Stevens this week and Bonnie McKinven. Brett caught his first marlin out of a little Plakka boat, while Bonnie caught her first marlin in the boat Fully Sic. A marine chart with coordinates of all fish tagged is being made up by EGFC for anyone to view at anytime. This is so that anglers and competitors in Gamex can see where fish have been caught. Matt at Bluewater hopes to put all information together each year and see what patterns emerge with these prevalent species. Please make sure that if you are tagging billfish, to correctly fill out the coordinates and help the club to learn more and help others to enjoy fishing for these species. A few mudcrabs have been showing up in the gulf lately. February is great for getting to just about any of your favourite fishing haunts without too many people around as it is our quietest time of year in Exmouth. The marina is forever growing and just this week youngsters Brooke and Hayden Michaels were catching bream on tiny poppers around the rockwalls. The two kids also fished the beaches and caught small trevally and dart. Jack and Alex Dandie have been having tonnes of fun with small spinning outfits and C'Ultiva shads around the Westside. The boys caught an amazing selection of fish including a beautiful northern threadfin salmon .
