Exmouth News 2006 10 19

The circle hook competition held by the Exmouth Game Fishing Club had some enthusiastic competitors out chasing varied species. James Roscic from Yardie Creek Caravan Park took out one of the sections with a 5kg chinaman fish, while Graeme Sigley caught an impressive 3kg spangled emperor. There were many more people who joined in the afternoon bbq and we would like to thank Cath Ryan for preparing all the salads.

Meanwhile the words on all boat anglers’ lips this week is “sailfish” as the numbers of tagged fish inside the gulf increase. One particular boat has had six half days out with sixteen fish tagged and many more sighted. Interestingly, on one day the first two fish tagged already had tags in the fish from previous captures. One was tagged about 11 months prior by Brendon Horne. Brendon has recently had four fish recaptured including two sailfish, one shark and one queenfish. It’s great to see our young anglers so keen on tagging and releasing and even more rewarding to have such good results, as it is a large ocean out there!

Pictured this week is wintertime-resident Brett Wolf. Brett runs a fly fishing lodge in Tasmania during the warmer months of the year and brings his wife and two children up here while the snow falls down in Tassie. Even in Brett’s time off, he loves to continue fishing and as you can see by the photo, he was very happy to land this superb cobia in the gulf. The fish was carefully hooked in the corner of the mouth with the fly and after a few pics, it was gently released back to the many bait schools in the gulf.

The Exmouth Game Fishing Club has now received the numberplate surrounds for the license plates which have the website and expansion of EGFC to help expose the fishing club further. They are $10 a pair and you can purchase them from Bluewater Tackle World Exmouth which is open seven days.
