Seventeen boats and over 70 enthusiastic anglers fished the annual Betta Electrical Billfish Bonanza on the weekend. Despite the fishing being a little slow, the competitors enjoyed their time on the water, especially during the glassy calm afternoon conditions. During the event Dirk Clatworthy aboard Reel Obsession tagged his first marlin - an impressive 250kg black. Trevor ‘Eppo’ Epding also tagged his first marlin aboard Indizara and took out champion angler for tag and release marlin. A few crew made the trek from Dampier and Karratha, with the guys aboard Black Label tagging two of their biggest marlin in the grounds west of the cape. Many sailfish were raised and hooked in the gulf, but the anglers aboard In Deep seemed to have the most luck in staying connected and took out the champion team section. Pete Versteeg won champion angler for sailfish and all juniors who fished won a prize. Several boats were towed up from Perth including the 26ft Blackwatch Rockall with owner Mick Callan, who continually supports the town and club throughout the year. New visitors from Kalbarri, the Malton family, fished hard but couldn’t find the luck. The young lads aboard On Strike were pleased to win the Booze barrow raffle on the presentation night and are looking forward to returning for Gamex. The club would like to specially thank Matt and Kristy Niikkula for continuing to support this annual event. Old Bundegi continues to fish well for queenfish of all sizes ranging from small 2kg fish right through to some 6kg monsters. The recent late afternoon low tide period has enabled easy wading of flats. It’s a great spot to go down to after work to unwind. All you need is a light spinning rod armed with a few spare lures and you’re away. Both Town Beach and Bundegi have been firing for the big yellowfin whiting most mornings on the rising tide. Exmouth resident Joel Batten fished town beach and had no trouble in catching enough for a fresh feed of these delicious fish for his partner Jae. The marina has seen a lot of fish activity with the recent spate of hot weather. Queenfish and small mackerel have been making lightning raids on the baitfish on the north wall whilst there have been plenty of bluebone caught by those using fresh squid or prawn for bait and fishing right in close to the rock wall itself. Inside the actual marina there have been plenty of good size bream with the occasional mangrove jack and spangled emperor mixed in too.
