Exmouth News 2007 10 04

School holidays have arrived, and the town is once again busy with holiday makers trying their best to chase a feed of fresh fish.  Thankfully the weather has been kind with lighter winds making life a bit easier to get out amongst it all.

Exmouth Gulf has seen the majority of the action with schools of longtail tuna, shark mackerel and queenfish all being spotted feeding on the masses of garfish around at the moment. The queenfish and the shark mackerel have been smashing the hapless baitfish right in close to the beach at times, well within casting distance of the shore based angler.

Young Shak Hart was out in the Gulf last Sunday with his dad Ken. The pair were trolling a couple of lures just out from the Marina when Shak’s deep diving Xrap lure took a hit from what turned out to be a big bar cheeked coral trout. Shak was obviously ecstatic with his prized trout capture and from all reports it tasted pretty good too!

Shak Hart looks pretty happy with his coral trout!

Yellowfin whiting are worth chasing off the beach, especially around the high tide period. Just about all the beaches around town are holding schools of whiting, although the Pebble Beach to Learmonth area is where the best reports have come from.

Squid are still prolific both north and south of the Marina with the aptly named squid rocks and two rocks areas being amongst the hotspots.

The west side of the cape has been a bit harder to fish due to the predominate south-west winds, however early morning (when there has been a touch of east in the wind) Tantabiddi has been fishable, and there has been some excellent spanish mackerel being caught with a couple of fish in excess of 20kg being taken within the last week on trolled lures behind the reef.
