Exmouth Marina is full of baitfish at present, and is a great spot to escape the wind and chase a few fish on light gear. Mangrove jacks have been spotted cruising under the various jetties and along the rock walls. With the water temperature starting to climb it won’t be long until the jacks become a lot more aggressive and start to become a more regular catch. Small trevally and queenfish are always active in the marina and provide good fun on light gear. Small soft plastics and metal lures are your best option for these fish, and they can be caught just about anywhere throughout the whole marina system. Along the tip of the cape, near the Mildura wreck, there have been queenfish and some big longtails making raids on the baitfish schooled up along the shore. Bluewater Exmouth’s Adrian Gribbon was spinning off the shore here during the week and hooked and landed a whopping big longtail tuna on a cast and retrieve metal lure. The big longtail nearly spooled Adrian on its first initial run, before slugging it out in close repeatedly swimming up and down the oyster reef ledge. After a long struggle Adrian landed the tuna which was estimated at around 12-14kg, took a couple of quick photos and released it back into the water.

Che’ Carson from Bluewater Scarborough briefly visited Exmouth over the weekend, and although the weather conditions were not exactly favourable with strong winds blowing constantly, still managed to find a few fish to throw lures at. Che’ fished the west side in the mornings and encountered various trevally and emperor species on jigs, while the afternoons were spent throwing metal lures amongst the big schools of longtail tuna commonplace in the Gulf at present.
