Exmouth News 2007 12 19

There have been plenty of reports of blue bone (black spotted tusk fish) being caught both along the Gulf beaches, and also at the access roads along the west side. It’s a great time of the year to chase the blue bone as they are definitely more prolific in the summer months. You definitely increase your chances of finding the blue bone by concentrating your fishing efforts around the high tide period, which is generally when they come into the shallows to feed.

Tantabiddi is fishing well for a mixture of pelagic species. The small black marlin have started to come through in bigger numbers, with some crews encountering up to six shots a day at the smaller blacks, mostly by working around the 100m line. Big dolphin fish have been prolific too, showing up in any depth from 30m of water right out to the canyons.  Spanish mackerel are worth chasing in the shallower areas, and most fish being reported have been of a good size too, with the average being 15kg.

A nice dolphin fish (mahi mahi) taken out from Tantabiddi during the week.

Inside the reef at Tantabiddi, it has mostly been spangled emperor with the odd larger trevally being caught too. Squid are still reasonably prolific inside the reef, for those chasing a nice feed of calamari for dinner, and all that is required is a quick drift over the weedy areas with jigs in tow and you're set.

Exmouth gulf is full of life as usual, big schools of bonito have been busting up just outside the Marina and there is a very good chance they will make their way into the actual marina to feed on the abundance of baitfish located in there at present. This time last year the bonito came into the Marina and it was quite a sight to see big schools of them smashing baitfish right throughout the Marina system even right up the back canals and amongst all the boat pens.
