Exmouth News 2008 01 22

A little weather angel hovered above Exmouth for the Tantabiddi camp out weekend, as light winds and small seas allowed boats to venture seaward. Seven-year-old Jackson Alexanderson caught his first fish from a boat, aboard Sean Lennon’s A Salt Weapon. It was a 42cm spangled emperor, which was carefully released. Jackson then tussled with a shark for some time, before handing the rod over to his Dad, Col.

Sean had a prize catch of a 9.5kg, 91cm long nose emperor. It was a thumper!

On the deep water scene, Shaun Battye from Karratha tagged an estimated 200kg blue marlin, which was a sensational fish. The blue was hooked in about 200m of water off the lighthouse, after being teased up by a surface lure trolled astern. The fight was relatively short and all the crew onboard were anxious as the fish didn’t seem to realise it was hooked. In a burst of excitement the fish nearly jumped into the boat, but was then released and quickly returned to his feeding grounds amongst the schools of tuna.

The Saturday night of the Tantabiddi camp-out was perfect for camping with no mozzies or midgies and a gentle breeze with perfectly warm conditions. The delicious bbq cooked by Des and Kath Ryan was enjoyed by all. A big thank you from the club goes to Dave Hall from Exmouth Dive Centre for supporting this annual event.

Meanwhile, along the shoreline a report just came in of a 10lb permit caught off the beach in the waters along the gulf south of the marina. Although these fish are not terribly good eating, they are a great sport fish and fly anglers in particular travel all over the world to target these species.

Large squid have been caught in many locations including the beaches off the tip of the cape.  Never venture out without a squid jig in your tackle box if you like calamari for dinner!
