We certainly have been fortunate in Exmouth over the past week with the weather and fishing being nothing short of sensational. Baitfish schools have once again arrived along the coast and have brought with them a wide variety of pelagic activity. A couple of groups of boating anglers fishing out near the islands reported coming across big schools of anchovy baitfish being harassed by everything including shark mackerel, spanish mackerel and tuna with even a couple of sailfish spotted joining in on the feeding frenzy. The anglers trolled around the baitfish and managed to land plenty of the Spanish mackerel .
A big mackerel tuna taken on light gear from Exmouth waters Exmouth gulf is still alive with tuna schools. Huge mack tuna and longtail tuna are widespread throughout the gulf. The stretch from the Marina up to Bundegi has been as good as anywhere to start looking for the schools. As the Tuna have been feeding on small baitfish, the best way to chase them is to drive up to the feeding schools and then throw small metal lures right in the middle of the school and then begin to wind as fast as possible. Beaches along the west side have been fishing well too, with baitfish often being pushed right in close to shore by the feeding fish. Lighthouse bay has been a good area to start looking, with reports of big trevally, queenfish and dart being taken from the shore. Trevor Tucker and Alex Dawson from Perth are in town for a couple of weeks fishing and have been doing well fishing off the shore down in the National Park. The pair have been wading along the beaches throwing around small hard bodied lures and soft plastics and have encountered plenty of spangled emperor and trevally. Big GT’s have been hooked by the guys but unfortunately lost with the fish being too powerful for the lighter gear they have opted to use. Text and pics © Bluewater Tackle World
