Bluewater Exmouth News Dec 5, 2008

Steve and Tim, a father and son up from Perth, have been fishing the Muiron Islands in their Boston Outrage for the last week and have caught some good mackerel, hooked a black marlin and landed a decent cobia that was swimming with a large tiger shark. There has also been tuna, mackerel, sails and black marlin on the west side caught by other anglers while trolling surface lures. Lumo colours have been a favourite for the lures, along with a few blues and whites.

The shore-fishing scene along the west side of the cape has turned up bluebone, spangled emperor, cod and queenfish. Old Bundegi has been holding good numbers of trevally and queenfish. In fact, you can see schools of bait being herded by predatory fish along the shoreline all the way along from Bundegi to the marina at certain times of the day.

Pictured this week is a 35kg mackerel measuring almost 1.8m that was caught while trolling a large bait onboard Terry Maxwell's charter boat. Terry had another punter last year catch a whopping big mackerel while trolling a lure. There's no doubt that these guys were happy with their visit to Exmouth! I think their wives were too when they returned home with fresh mackerel for dinner.

Another big spanish mackerel caught onboard Osso Blue

Tuna schools have been harder to find this week, but keeping an eye out for diving birds has paid off for some anglers catching longtails and mack tuna in the gulf. It pays to be observant around the boat while heading out: two different boats on the weekend reported seeing dugong, manta rays and even a good size whale shark not far from the channel at the marina. Both these boats were just cruising for the afternoon to see the Sun Princess that was moored in the gulf.

The EGFC end of year presentation and Christmas function is on this Sunday the 14th of December from 5pm at the Yacht Club. If you are a member and haven't RSVP'd, then they assume you are not coming. There will be beach cricket, casting games and karaoke, along with the presentation. Santa will be visiting too! If you would like to come along and are not a member, or you are a member and haven't RSVP'd, then ring Kathy on 9949 1086 to see if they can fit you in.
