Bluewater Tackle World News 11th November 2010

Customers Ivor and Nick Owen recently travelled to partake in Alan Philliskirk's fly & sportfishing charter in Weipa, Queensland, and had nothing but praise for the operation. Guide Jason Owens (no relation) helped put Ivor on to a few giant herring (amongst many other species), including this healthy 110cm specimen, which fell to a leadhead jig.

Amberjacks, samsons and small yellowtail kings are around the barges west of Rottnest, however the sharks are also in attendance at many spots. Please think of the fish and move if you get “visited” by the tax man. The reports of a dead whale attended by a number of large tigers and whites just shows the size of the beasts out in the area.

The number of big bities out there, prompted one of our Morley regulars to pop in yesterday for some custom rigged shark gear to take on a particularly annoying largish mako that has been plaguing him. Wish we could see that fight!

Skippy and king george whiting are still around the Three Mile Reef area for those that put in the effort, although the size of the skippy is starting to drop back down to summer sizes again. Reports of good size whiting off the northern beaches are encouraging but still only from the boats as of yet.

Cray season is almost upon us. The new style plastic Katipo pots won't arrive in store until December sometime, but we have stocks of the timber slat pots rigged and ready to go. Don’t forget the most important millimetre of your life, remember the new escape gap size has increased to 55mm from 54mm, so don’t get caught out. All stores now have plenty of the new escape gaps in stock, so come on in and get your pots ready.

The Swan River has been abundant with tailor and herring around the lower parts. Small stickbait lures such as the River2Sea Baby Rover 50 have been working quite effectively on these surface fish. Flathead have been spotted around Claremont area. Working bright hardbody lures around dropoffs has been effective technique for these fish.

Mullet schools are very active on the surface from Redcliffe to Guildford which offers the birds easy pickings. If conditions are right, sight casting to big sea mullet can bring on the adrenalin - casting small size eight weed fly imitations and floating bread flies.

Bream have been caught as far up as Midland, using bloodworms and river prawns have been popular baits.

A reminder that the W.A. 2010 Calamari Classic Series Round 2 will be taking place on Sunday 14th November from the Cockburn Pleasure Boat Storage (Woodmans Point). Call in to any store for more details. Good luck to everyone.
