Bluewater Tackle World News 20th August 2010

Snapper and jewfish are still the main game inshore and offshore. The crew from Scarborough went out before work Sunday morning for a soft plastic session with good results. Tim once again bagged out by 5.20am with a jewfish and snapper but line honours went to Tyson with a thumping 94cm beast caught on a 7” Gulp in Nuclear Chicken and a new prototype Black Jack jig head. He is now banned from fishing on Tim’s boat! Scarborough is now in front of the snapper challenge so take that!

Who needs to sleep when you can get out before work and catch snapper like this!

There are still heaps of southern bluefin tuna around, both in close and wide of Rottnest, falling to trolled Bolt Mystique 140mm minnows and cast metal baitfish lures, with a stand out performer being the small Instinct profiles. Tailor to 60cm have made appearances at Swanbourne Drain, Floreat, City Beach and Trigg Point at dawn and dusk.

Snapper are not the only ones looking for breakfast at that time of day..

Congratulations went to Bluewater Mindarie's  AJ Kane this week, with him and Tony Vine returning from a trip to Exmouth. AJ managed two lovely marlin. The first went about 50kg on 15kg, and the second about the same but on 24kg. The fish were released.

Sensational Exmouth marlin that you don't have to travel too far to find.

Baldchin have been good this week out from Mindarie with local angler Graeme catching two good size ones. The biggest went 6.5kg. King george whiting have been fairly common with some 60cm rippers coming from waters up to 32m off Ocean Reef to Mindarie. Skippy have been pretty consistent, with local rockwalls like Mindarie and Two Rocks the better places to try.

A hungry queenfish will have a go at just about anything.

A couple of the crew from Bluewater Melville have been tangling with some yellowtail kingfish around the Stragglers area, with good fish being landed to 70cm on a few occasions.

Herring have been pretty good too with some decent bags caught. Squid continue to be a reliable target from Two Rocks to Hillarys and no doubt all along the coast with the winter weather and cold water bringing them in. A local Mindarie customer reports some decent success on mulloway to the north of Ocean Reef, while another has been getting into fish to ten kilos near the Moore River.

This is the perfect time of year to get amongst your favourite demersal species.

Bluewater Tackle World’s Hal Harvey, Dave Holbery and Matt Gates have recently returned from a session at the Monte Bellos group of islands, between Dampier and Exmouth, where they fished on board Blue Juice Charters with the Ifish TV show crew. There are 122 islands in the group, and the scenery is just sensational.

The first show resulting from that trip goes to air this Sunday on One HD at 4:30pm, with a land-based session showing off the brilliant variety of species readily available on light tackle right at your feet. Tackle World Geraldton’s Peter Norris and Lloyd Lyons feature. Spangled emperor were the target species, but inevitable plenty of other ooglies get in the way too.

Paul Worsteling and Tackle World Geraldton’s Lloyd Lyons with a Montes chinaman fish.

There are several more shows to come in the next few weeks from the Montes trip, so keep an eye on weekend TV for West Australian giant trevally, spanish mackerel, chinaman fish and plenty of information.

Whales are everywhere off the coast at the moment so please be carefull when travelling in low light conditions.

The Bluewater Crew.
