Bluewater Tackle World News 16th June 2010

Johari Rochfort from Bluewater Scarborough had a memorable day out with one of the Mindarie crew – choosing to have some fun with plastics after he had caught a nice jewfish around the seven kilo mark, Rochfort dropped a plastic into 45 metres and came up solid on the retrieve – after a tense and dogged fight that saw the boat and angler travel more than a mile fighting the fish, a very solid 30 kilo samson fish surfaced metres from the boat – a couple of happy snaps later saw the fish released, not a bad effort on 20lb spin gear that had others on nearby boats congratulating him back at the ramp.

Jewfish have been a little more reliable this week with some better fish around 15 kilo coming from Mindarie and Two Rocks – John Balestra and son Jarrod had a ball out from Mindarie nabbing two jewfish – 15 kilo and eight kilo before noon last Saturday. Another good fish that was released around the eight kilo mark fell to Jarrod whilst working soft plastics. Duncan Brown from Duncraig also basked in the glory after he managed two nice jewfish in just two drops out from Two Rocks.

Graeme Stewart has enjoyed great success on king george whiting and reports good numbers in close proximity to the jewfish out past direction bank in 50 metres of water. There are some massive bait schools out past the Three Mile Reef and we had a report from regular Mindarie customer Ben after a morning pink snapper fish, he had been visited by a great white shark bigger than his 5 metre boat, luckily he had already captured one nice pink snapper and was still a little white himself after getting back. More pink snapper reports filtering through on the top of the Three Mile.

Thirteen year old Bradley Cullin also enjoyed showing his dad and mate how it’s done, recently landing a 29 kilo samson fish on 15 kilo Nitlon braid out from Mindarie. He also claimed a nice baldchin groper and a smaller samson fish but nothing as big as his first one.

All of that hard work paid off with this 29 kilo samson fish being the catch of the day.

Tim from Bluewater Morley was out chasing snapper near Centaur Reef on Saturday night when a surprise school of juvenile southern bluefin tuna crashed through the berley trail, so you never know what will respond to a healthy slick.

Thumper sand and king george whiting have been thick off Hale Road Reef. Anglers have encountered large schools of juvenile pink snapper while fishing for smaller bread and butter species.

Tough enough for big samson fish........ Nitlon.

Cuttlefish have been around in numbers stealing baits meant for other fare. Sand whiting are still there for the taking outside the Three Mile, while skippy have been rampant on the Three Mile Reef – just a small amount of berley is enough to get these fish in a feeding frenzy while off the rock walls similar efforts are rewarding those prepared to make the effort.

Squid are still thick throughout Cockburn Sound and the northern weed banks. Offshore from Hillarys is where you will find some bigger specimens as well.

Beaches to the north of Quinns Rocks have been a target for tailor anglers with some nice fish to 50 centimetres accompanied by some gummy sharks between 10 and 20 kilo.

Dave from Bluewater Scarborough is all smiles after fishing an awesome looking piece of beach and turning up a nice piece of chrome .

Tailor and salmon are still a good chance from the southern beaches especially with the easterly breeze this week. Reports indicate that the salmon that are around are keeping “gentlemen’s” hours with most catches occurring after 9am.

Tuna to 15 kilos were caught 200m off Ocean Reef Marina last Wednesday. We have heard a few reports this week of tuna hanging around still so it’s always worth having a troll for these speedsters on the way to your usual fishing grounds.
