The onset of rough weather has brought with it the much sought-after pink snapper into many shore based locations – Bluewater Melville customer Linley got into them last Sunday, keeping a good eight kilo fish during a day time session off one of the local rock walls. We are yet to hear of any further being landed but there have been upwards of half a dozen hooked and lost in the last few days.

Remember, snapper are extremely responsive to berley, so if you are chasing these big prizes from the shore, chop up some mulies or similar and throw a handful in the water where you are fishing.
The other main one to keep in mind is the fact that when these snapper are brought in closer during the rough weather, they are actually in feeding on the rock crabs and mussels which are washed out of the rocks – if you are casting somewhere in the vicinity of South Africa, then you are in most cases casting straight over the head of the fish you are after.
Sharp hooks rigged correctly are one key element when chasing any species.
There are still numbers of salmon around local waters - Aaron Tippet from Bluewater Melville caught and released a number from the shore at Rottnest on the weekend just gone, using Instinct Joe Bruiser lures. There have also been a few landed from both North and South Mole over the last week. Small schools are still visible cruising along the rock walls so you can still get a chance to land one of these great sportfish from the shore locally, without having to drive some distance south.

An Instinct Joe Bruiser proved too much for this Rottnest salmon.
Tailor have been harder to find due to weed build up along the beaches, but if you find clear water then your chances improve dramatically.

In the river, there have been a number of good sized mulloway hooked and landed in the lower reaches, and with this current rainfall we should see a bit of an increase in fish activity as the fresh flushes out. Skippy are again active, along with numbers of large mullet. With the numbers of prawns moving at the moment the yellowfin whiting are present as well, and a late night session resulting in a feed of these is always worth the effort. Squid have again appeared in the lower reaches, with numbers of smaller ones also present off the moles.

Regular Morley customers Steve and Shane Owen of team, “two men in a tinny” did well on the weekend winning the latest Swan River bream competition using a combination of SX40s, Snapback grubs and Eyeball tails. Well done guys.

A bay full of salmon all to yourself.....doesn't get much better than this!
Herring are still prevalent all around the Metro Area with the chance of gardies, South of the Moles. Berleying anywhere in the Metro area is a surefire way of ensuring a feed and some great fun.

Offshore the rougher weather has been interspersed with days very conducive to boating, and the fishers that have ventured out have been having quite a bit of luck on a wide range of species. Sharks averaging 1.2m to 1.5m have been making things interesting on the Five Fathom for people chasing other species. Amongst the catches have been harlequin fish, numerous jewfish and snapper, king george whiting and baldchin.

The Three Mile reef is still thick with skippy and snapper for those prepared to brave the elements. Sand whiting have been reliable from the inside with the tasty fish being almost guaranteed with some good bags coming through.

Baldchin have been active and on the large size – Joff Weston from Bluewater Mindarie landing a couple of five-kilo models this week. King george have also been a common catch with some 60cm specimens coming through.

AJ Kane and Jason Rushton had a great start to a bottom fishing session last week on the way out past the three mile getting two pinkies 74cm and 68cm and a size jewfish before even crossing over the back Three Mile Reef.
Some warmer water was pushed down during the week with some nasty currents resulting - there has been some halfway decent dolphin fish at the FADs however.
