Bluewater Tackle World News for December 26th Yes we are open today (Boxing Day), and we will be open every day over the next little while except New Year's Day. Our holiday season opening hours are on the site here. We thank you very much for all your support throughout 2008 and look forward to seeing you in 2009. A very Happy New Year from Hal, Liza and the kids, Joffa, Dave, Nick, Brett, Stilly, John, Rohan, Chris, Matt, Jeni, Damien, Josh, Grant, Shane, Quintin, all the Matts, Karl, Ben, Peter, AJ, Browny, Dave, Belly, Ben and Eddy. Rocky sends his best from Christmas Island and there's another 19 part-timers that I won't list but who also appreciate your patronage and look forward to helping you soon! *** Squid lovers will be very happy to know we have received in the full range of Kanji squid jigs from Japan. These jigs lead the market in Japan now, and have been painstakingly designed by three squidding experts there. We haven't had time to get them on the site and out on the shelves this week, but watch for them in the next little while. They are the best squid jigs we have ever had. *** From the freaky files: Italian free-diver Gianluca Genoni last month set a new world record for “static apnoea with oxygen", of 18 minutes and three seconds. Now if you have to look up static apnoea like I did, I'll save you the trouble: in this instance, it means holding your breath underwater. Eighteen minutes and three seconds! Genoni's record required extensive training and loading up on oxygen prior to the attempt. Amongst his other records is a free dive, i.e. one breath at the surface, down to 142 metres. Wow. *** We have a limited number of the Ryobi Metaroyal Safari 5000 reels still available from the first Australian shipment - see here. There is no indication at this time as to when we will see a second shipment. There's likely to be a significant price increase when that does eventually happen, as these reels were paid for at a much better exchange rate than we currently have. *** This week's Bluewater Tackle World newsletter special is a full 40% off all skim boards and skate boards in stock, for the next two weeks. That's both instore and online, but we don't have many of them on the site yet. We'll add some more on in the next few days. See them and all the other specials here. *** Here’s this weekend's Sunday Times fishing news, with a bit of extra stuff... PERTH METROPOLITAN Duncraig’s Geoff Kirk and his regular deckie Gavin Castiglioni of Carine have been having a good time of it with their craypots, bagging out one day and another good haul the next, both families being treated to fresh crays over Christmas. Icing on the cake was Gavin’s four year old son Max’s first fish. The men dropped the anchor on the way back to Hillarys after pulling their pots, and had herring and garfish in the berley trail within five minutes, Max soon catching his first ever fish. Northern marinas are yielding herring and the odd size skippy, the summer tailor run on the improve, some coming from rock walls. Beaches are working well, especially those to the north of town, Wilbinga a hot spot where mulloway and big herring have been added to bags, the smaller fish biting all day on some occasions. Have a look at Club Capricorn, Hillarys Marina and Cottesloe reefs for tailor. Long Point whiting made for some good fishing. Bluewater Morley staffers are showing how it’s done, Peter Birch trying out his trolling set-up just off Cottesloe, where an early season shark mackerel jumped on. If you want to emulate that, remember this: if you think you’re too far off shore, you are; and if you think you’re too close in, you’re not. Karl Rosenow caught six flathead hear Point Walter, his best 55cm (now leading the Bluewater staff Flathead Challenge), all but one released. Bream are active well upstream, Guildford, Lilac Hill and Bandyup worth a try, as is near the Casino. Troy Aberin and Jason Rushton had a ball on mid-north metro beaches, catching and releasing excellent yellowfin whiting, most 30-40cm long. Boat fishers should try 30 to 45m deep water for jewfish, baldchin groper and king george whiting, pink snapper much closer in, especially between the One Mile and Three Mile Reefs. BUSSELTON Squidders from the Jetty have encountered squid so large they have been worried about them breaking off, dinghy users adding squid to their king george bags. From Busselton and west coast beaches the herring were active, big fat garfish around some spots, a tiny strip of mulie enticing the tasty gars to bite, a few tailor from beaches. There were many small salmon captured from the Jetty, but you need to watch their legal size. In the Bay king george were a prize catch, jewfish around the Eight Mile and beyond. West coast jewfish were plentiful close in, the best of them to 10kg, bigger fish and many harlequin and breaksea cod in deeper waters. Amateur cray chasers have done well at Peppermint Beach with just fair numbers along the west coast. Crabbing around Busselton is excellent. KALBARRI Tailor activity hotted up at local spots, Blue Holes and Chinamans notable, poppers working a treat over shallow reef areas. The River Mouth has fished exceptionally well for mulloway as have spots over the river, like Frustration and places north, quad bikers landing some beauties, the odd pink snapper adding variety. Wittecarra Creek and Red Bluff are also among tailor hotspots, a couple of mulloway to eight kilos there too. Dean Robins and Glen Gould caught five spanish mackerel over a weekend with other boating parties also doing well. Deep diving lures proved the undoing of many of the macks. Dart and skippy made a target for beach fishers. Coastal Gorges produced some nice pink snapper and baldchin groper. Whiting activity has increased in the Murchison and its usual good bream fishing continues. Boating groups working well offshore have done well, with jewfish and red emperor prominent in bags. EXMOUTH The most recent Exmouth-only newsletter is on the site here, with one of the local mangrove jacks pictured. There'll be a new newsletter up soon. A few of the Bluewater metro staff are heading to Exmouth during January, which is a fair indication they the fishing can be expected to be very good. *** Bluewater Tackle World News comes from Bluewater, 21 Scarborough Beach Road, Scarborough, Western Australia - phone 08 9245 1313 - www.bluewater.net.au
