Here’s a preview of this weekend's Sunday Times fishing news, with a bit of extra stuff...

PERTH METROPOLITAN

The star attraction for Cockburn Sound boaties, squid, are fewer in number but up in size according to our Sound watchers, pink snapper catches there better in mid and northern portions. The Five Fathom hosts good numbers of skippy. Anthony Kane and Tony Vine had an interesting session offshore where Kane used soft plastic Snap Backs while Vine worked the baits. Four jewfish and a baldchin succumbed to the soft plastics while the bait enticed a baldchin and a breaksea cod. A sidelight was that the bait was constantly picked at while the lures attracted attention from only better fish.

Squid and herring are abundant along the mid and northern reef territory, the odd skippy pushing closer in, shore fishers having to contend with masses of weed. Troy Aberin caught a salmon from shore recently. North and South Moles have turned up a few herring, snapper chasing proving a disappointment there.

Salmon were caught in numbers and at a good size from Floreat Beach last weekend.

Bream have been harder to find, deeper water around Claremont among better locations to try, especially near structure. Jason Rushton and Troy Aberin had a cracker of a day when fishing for bream in downstream waters, the pair catching and releasing numbers of large fish, Rushton scoring a personal best with a 45cm bream, baits doing the trick for them.

BUSSELTON

There are heaps and heaps of crabs in Geographe Bay with drop netting a better option in these cooler times. Squid are more prevalent in deeper waters, anything from 8m outwards more rewarding and pink snapper made a prime target at the Four Mile. Ocean to Outback’s Rusty Ellis, along with Dave Vigors and another mate Simon scored five jewfish about 14k offshore, a thumper queen snapper also boated.

The same applies off the west coast, where the jewfish are well out and the snapper much closer in. The odd very good tailor has been nabbed off the west coast when conditions allow.

GERALDTON

Az Zaito landed a 1.2m mackerel from shore north of Flat Rocks, many tailor there too, plenty of them above 60cm. Nearer the Abrolhos Islands a near 2m wahoo was caught and an estuary cod around 35-40kg caught and released.

Try Southgates where whiting were found while one shore fisher reckons Horrocks whiting are big and fat.

EXMOUTH

There's an Exmouth-only newsletter on the site every week. This week's is here, and features a seriously large mackerel. Exmouth seems to be becoming the place for really huge spaniards - 20 years ago it was Quobba, ten years ago it was Karratha, now it's Exmouth. There'll be another newsletter up next week.
