Bluewater Tackle World News for September 18th

West Australians finally have a new Government, a Liberals/Nationals alliance that shows promise, and today our new Fisheries Minister was announced. It's the Honourable Norman Moore, MLC for the Mining & Pastoral electorate. He has been in Parliament for over 31 years. He should know how it all works! We look forward to working with him. This will be his first stint at Fisheries.

Some news in from our friends at Accurate in California this week. One of our better-selling big spinning reels is the Accurate 30, and later this year Accurate will be bringing out a TwinSpin 50! That will be the world's largest spinning reel; and with a capacity of 450yds of 130lb braid, no doubt also one of the strongest.

Also in the works are larger versions of their popular Boss Magnum lever drag overhead reels. The new reels will both be two-speeds, in the 30 and 50 game reel sizes. The 30 is almost here, and the 50 will be sometime early next year.

There's a special newsletter with some pics from this week at Christmas Island, Indian Ocean. Bluewater Melville manager Nick Bailey is fishing with Rocky and testing a heap of new tackle on some good fish.

Last week's Bluewater Tackle World special was on Sage fly reels, 2500 and 3000 series to suit line weights from 3wt to 12wt across eight models. Save up to $249, and that special continues on this week. To match them, we've dropped 20% from the price of Sage's most popular value fly rods, the Fli series. See the rods here.

That's some of the world's best and most popular fly rods and reels from the world's most respected fly tackle manufacturer. All the specials are here.

Check out the first of the new Saltiga S-Extreme reels. This will be the only size of overhead this year, but there will be two S-Extreme spin reels in around December to add to the range. There are three matching S-Extreme rods, one overhead for heavy line around PE8, a spin version of the same, and a spin version for around PE5 50lb braid. All the rods are now in stock, all $599 each including 10% GST in Australia. They are all beautiful pices of work.

Here’s a preview of this weekend's Sunday Times fishing news, with a bit of extra stuff...

PERTH METROPOLITAN

Flathead have made Swan River fishing more interesting with increased numbers, especially around flats areas nearer Fremantle, Claremont also yielding better numbers of flatties. Try near the Police Academy in Maylands for better bream fishing.

Sand whiting to 30cm were a treat for boat fishers close to shore at spots such as City Beach and Hillarys. Simon Darthwaite and Brendan Earle caught good numbers of plump sandies off Mindarie. Good size skippy were caught around Mindarie, and the Five Fathom Bank continued to fish well for them. Garfish and herring made the better targets at marinas, with heaps of small garfish around Fremantle rock walls.

Reasonable numbers of pink snapper were nabbed from Cockburn Sound. The closure for Cockburn Sound snapper fishing begins on October 1st. Squid are being taken, but the numbers are decreasing with warmer waters.

BUSSELTON

Geographe Bay is supporting large numbers of squid, and crabbing is a popular pastime with many of them about too, drop netting from both boats and the jetty productive. Herring are another jetty species on tap, early morning and just before dusk the best times.

When weather conditions aren’t too bad, catching king george whiting is easier as you are able to spot the sand holes. In good weather larger boats have found good jewfish out towards Naturaliste Reef and off the west coast, a couple of thumpers brought in, one weighing 23kg and another 24kg.

Shore anglers have landed some excellent tailor near Dunsborough, with that species fishing well from the west coast when seas allow.

ALBANY

Albany has a similar situation to other south-west spots, with the weather governing what you can do at this time of year. Reasonable mixed bags have resulted from deep sea outings, with pink snapper, red snapper and the odd jewfish featuring, as are queen snapper, breaksea cod and samson fish. Leatherjackets remain a problem and boaties need to be prepared to move around to get away from them. The story is similar for waters from Walpole to Bremer Bay.

Shore fishing is a tad quiet, small herring and skippy are biting along with fair numbers of sand whiting. Salmon are a possibility east of town at the likes of Cheynes Beach, Bluff Creek and Bremer. Recent big seas in the region means you must be careful where you choose to 4wd, similarly great care needs to be taken if you want to try rock fishing. Salmon spots around Albany itself have yielded just the occasional fish, Gull Rock, Nannarup and Little Beach turning up the odd salmon.

The Harbours are working ok for king george, squid and the odd snook, near Frenchman’s Bay and Seal Rock among better locations. Two Peoples Bay launching is hampered by masses of weed, and Wilson Inlet offers a variety of species, salmon, pink snapper and king george among them.

Albany region rivers hold quite cool waters and are fishing slowly because of that, although the near-Albany Kalgan and King are performing better for bream and school mulloway.
