Bluewater Tackle World News for October 3rd

A late newsletter this week in the hope of bringing you new WA Fisheries Minister Norman Moore's decisions on the ex-Jon-Ford package, but at the time of writing that hasn't happened. We'll work on the theory of no news being good news.

We're probably all getting used to hearing about things getting done on a grand scale in Dubai. Massive man-made islands, skyscraper hotels, biggest, fastest, flashest.

So it might come as a bit of a surprise, when hearing them extolling the virtues of the latest marina to be approved, that this new project has only has 75 berths. Given that it's part of the Palm Jumeirah project (pic here), we expected more. Gee, even we have marinas that will pen a couple of hundred boats.

Of course, 30 of those 75 berths will take craft between 50m and 165m (514') in length. The only boats smaller than 14m that they're making provision for, are tenders. Not really a lot of demand for that kind of thing around here.

They say it will take one year from now, to completion.

If you're into baitcasters and drinking cold drinks, you'll probably appreciate the trouble we go to to design super high-tech pinnacles of innovation like our combination reel cover drink holder. Should you feel the need to justify your next stubby cooler purchase, see that one here.

This week's Bluewater Tackle World special is up to 2/3 off some models of the ever-popular Bladerunner knives range. We scored a good buy and we're passing it on. See them and all the other specials here.

Here’s a preview of this weekend's Sunday Times fishing news, with a bit of extra stuff...

PERTH METROPOLITAN

Chopper tailor along the metro coast mark a start to the summer season, but you need to watch the size at this early stage. Woodman Point and northern marinas have turned on some of the choppers, Canning Bridge and Point Walter best for the river, and bigger tailor have been landed from Cottesloe Groyne and the Trigg Blue Hole. Some of those fish have been over two kilos, so no problem with being undersize there.

Smaller species such as herring, skippy and pilch made other targets around marina walls. The Moles are holding a few herring and the odd squid, numbers of the latter increasing in the Sound after a few quieter weeks. Bluewater Morley’s Karl Rosenow spent a day off catching and releasing bream and flathead from near Causeway waters, finding hard-bodied lures the most successful. Small samson fish provided some fun for down-river fishers.

Jewfish made prize catches for offshore anglers, 30m of water out from Mindarie and Ocean Reef yielding fish, pink snapper found in the same areas. Small boat fishers are coming back with plenty of small stuff from Cockburn Sound waters, one chap bagging heaps of herring and skippy from the east side of the shipping channel.

BUSSELTON

Cathy Ellis reckons the crabbing in their area is excellent, including some beauties about the place, squid too around in good numbers, herring, skippy and whiting frequenting Geographe Bay. Tailor were biting at the mouth of the Wonnerup and at Port Geographe rock walls, Injidup on the west coast also good for tailor.

A couple of whopper samson fish were taken from the Jetty over the past two weeks, and when weather conditions permit boaties have nabbed pink snapper and jewfish.

GERALDTON

Although tough conditions hamper boating groups, South West Bank has fished well for really good snapper, the best of them around 6-8kg, plenty of smaller ones about, some moderate size jewfish caught with heaps of baldchin. It’s a similar scenario for near Abrolhos waters. Sweetlip were prevalent around South West Bank and the odd spanish mackerel weighing near 12-13kg has also been caught near the Southern Group of the Abrolhos.

Graham Maunder says the great skippy fishing enjoyed for the past two months has continued around inshore reefs, especially about Point Moore, where the skippy average from .75 to 1.5kg. Whiting fishing for both school and yellowfin in the region is excellent, rock walls at the likes of Point Moore, Separation Point, the Live Cray Factory, Explosives Jetty and at Drummonds firing for whiting, some flathead taken from Drummonds, as were cobbler, herring and the odd tailor. Mulloway catches are declining. Beach angling activity is severely hampered by weed pushed up by big swells.

First and Second Point near the Greenough River Mouth is okay for tailor in the early morning and late evening, some herring and pike there too.

EXMOUTH

There's a new Exmouth-only newsletter on the site here, with one of those baitfish school pics that just reeks of predators. There'll be another newsletter up soon.
