From the office of Senator Barnaby Joyce:

The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and Other Legislation Amendment Bill 2008 (GBRMPA) has moved to a new chapter, with the Government recognising the failings in their legislation as raised by Senator Barnaby Joyce.

Federal Coalition amendments that were successful will see the removal of criminal convictions against 324 fishermen who have been targeted for fishing in a Green Zone prior to 14 December 2006.

With the help and support of the Queensland fishing industry and many recreational fishermen with their stories of family fishing trips ending in fines and criminal convictions, we have been able to deliver some protection to the rights and lifestyle of Queenslanders.

More needs to be done and the Coalition will continue to fight tirelessly for the inherent right to enjoy the Great Barrier Reef without threat or uncertainty of the ramifications. Recreational fishing is a great contributor to the economy of North Queensland and it is a tradition that should not be hampered by onerous legislation.

Cray season kicks off on Saturday 15th locally. We have everything you need: pots, gaps, gauges, ropes, floats, bait, the works. Don't be discouraged by all the media reporting bad news; they're talking about what it might be like in four years. But it probably won't be.

Here’s a preview of this weekend's Sunday Times fishing news, with a bit of extra stuff...

PERTH METROPOLITAN

Beaches in northern areas, right up to Moore River, are fishing well for tailor with herring also widespread, but you need to look for weed-free territory and duck the strong south-westers. Marinas are firing for herring and chopper tailor, Hillarys in particular, some skippy there too. The marina tailor seem to respond better when the sea breeze comes in.

This time of the year jewfish are often caught close to shore, probably following the crays, and it appears this is so again, numbers of jewies coming from 32m to 36m out from marinas, breaksea cod in the same spots. Samson fish are frequenting the Southern Barges country and are in large numbers.

The Swan has proven an exciting place to fish with some mulloway activity, especially near the Narrows where heaps of baitfish have been seen. Chopper tailor were biting near Canning Bridge. Bluewater Morley staffer Peter Birch took his boat to the Karrakatta Bank area near Claremont looking for flathead, missing out on those but enjoying catching tailor and flounder instead.

BUSSELTON

Aaryn Johansen of Tackle World Busselton has had a couple of excellent outings in recent days. He did well fishing from the shore between the Jetty and Marina, bringing back whiting, herring and skippy, the hour before dark working best for him. He has also been out on the Jetty with his squid jig and brought in a half-dozen in just 20 minutes. There are some huge samson fish raiding Jetty waters from time to time, the squid making themselves scarce during these raids.

Crabbing is fantastic everywhere in Geographe Bay, from Dunsborough to Peppermint Beach yielding numbers of the tasty blues. Some are able to catch their limit using just three drop nets in pretty quick time.

Boating parties aren’t going out far to find jewfish, the Four Mile producing but you need to move around to find them. Once you have located a school you should score. There are also some big skippy on the Four Mile, as well as the usuals, king george and pink snapper.

JURIEN BAY

Craig White is excited about fishing in his home patch, as well as being chuffed at bringing home a trophy from an Exmouth game fishing competition. It’s the number of jewfish around that makes him so primed, the fish close to shore in water anywhere from 20 to 50m deep. Some lumps in only 10-12m deep water have yielded jewies, decent sized pink snapper plentiful on reefs to the south of town and adjacent to Hill River. Samson fish are schooling around the 20m drop-off.

Further offshore, schools of striped and yellowfin tuna were encountered in 50m of water between the banks.

White reckons the tailor in the region are going “bananas” and can be found right along beaches, good yellowfin and sand whiting in sand holes around the Islands. Herring too are prolific and Sandy Cape has turned up some great flathead. The Jurien Marina yielded some nice skippy.
