Bluewater Tackle World News for November 21st

There's another Pink Fly Fishing Clinic on at Point Walter, Saturday 6 December 2008. We covered this event last time it was held, and it was well attended and

enthusiastically received.

The Pink Flyfishing Clinic is for women recovering from breast cancer. If you know of anyone who might be interested in attending, please forward this invitation on to them, and they may register at Recfishwest.

The Pink Flyfishing Clinic is a day of flyfishing and fun! Whether you are a beginner, or already have flyfishing skills, come along and enjoy yourself! Lisa Sharp and Alan Guthrie will be the hosts, with assistance from David Bell and other members from the Saltwater Flyrodders Association WA Inc.

Time is 9.30am to 11.30am, and refreshments and a light lunch will be provided after the clinic.
You need comfortable clothes, a hat, sneakers/sandals you don't mind getting wet, and sunglasses. If you have a pink shirt from the last year, feel free to wear it. Plenty of sunscreen will be made available on the day.

If you already have a fly rod you may choose to bring it along, otherwise rods, reels and tackle will all be provided on the day.

Cray season began locally last Saturday, and has seen some excellent starts. Both whites and reds in good numbers. We have everything you need: pots, gaps, gauges, ropes, floats, bait, the works. We also have some great stainless spring-loaded cray loops at $43.99, or two for $69 until the end of December, for the divers. They're not on the site and are a bit difficult to post, so we're not doing it as an online special; but if you want a few, we'll work something out.

This week's Bluewater Tackle World internet special is Adrenalin 5mm neoprene zip boots, in shoe sizes 5 to 14 depending on the language you speak, only $25/pair! That's one week only and online orders only. See them and all the other specials here.

Logue Brook Dam will re-open for recreational use on December 1st, and will stay that way for at least as long as we have a Liberal government! Now on to the rest of the water catchments in WA that we're not allowed within 2km of...

If you saw IFISH on Australian TV last weekend, you would have seen the very cool Avaya Nightfire reels. Apart from the bling of flashing LEDs when the handle is turned, which really does it for the kids, they're actually very good reels for the price - three ball bearings with an instant anti-reverse bearing, tubular bail, rubberised paint, aluminium handle arm, ported aluminium spool; and we have them on a Christmas introductory price of $49.99. They're in stock now, although stocks are limited for the next few weeks.

Check them out on YouTube and on the site here. Definitely a winner for Christmas, but be quick!

Here’s a preview of this weekend's Sunday Times fishing news, with a bit of extra stuff...

PERTH METROPOLITAN

Quality pink snapper have joined the list of bottom species being caught quite close to shore, jewfish, king george, breaksea cod and pinkies, with the odd baldchin, also about in numbers in deeper areas, 30 to 36m recommended depths to fish. Samsons have made pests of themselves by beating up tackle meant for the bottom dwellers in that territory. Other samson fish aggregations are occurring at the offshore barges and wrecks. Yellowfin tuna schools were spotted out wide. Inside near-shore reefs continue to yield herring and garfish, sand whiting only patchy while the number of skippy is diminishing as summer approaches.

Metro surf beaches are okay for tailor, mulloway and herring, Triggs Blue Hole turning up a couple of mulloway, City and Floreat Beaches likely to serve up masses of herring with decent berleying. Cottesloe and the ASI Groynes have fished well for tailor and herring, and yellowfin whiting activity has increased so it’s time to head to your usual beach spot after those very tasty fish.

Chopper tailor are widespread in the Swan, tarwhine a feature of the Canning, flathead well worth chasing. Bluewater’s Chris Boyling has been catching and releasing a couple from Belmont, while Claremont and Point Walter also good for flathead. Better bream spots are between Belmont and Bassendean.

MANDURAH

Berkley Gulp, in the 3” Minnow pattern have worked a treat for herring, small salmon and tailor in the Dawesville Cut, while another Berkley Gulp, this time a 7” Jerk Shad, tricked three pink snapper for Neil Grant while he was fishing Bouvard Reef. Jewfish catches are patchy with best results coming from 30m deep water.

San Remo and nearby beaches are yielding small mulloway and the usual suspects. Skippy, herring and tailor are at White Hills, where bait balls have been moving through.

Crabbing is terrific in the Mandurah Estuaries.

WAROONA/HARVEY DAMS

Trout caught from both Waroona and Harvey Dams have been mostly browns and there are heaps of redfin to keep anglers busy.

GERALDTON

Tailor fishing has been terrific right along the Geraldton coast, Lucy’s, Seven Mile, Nine Mile, Flat Rocks and to Coronation Beach all hot for good tailor, the best fish to 65cm, average size 40 to 50cm. Evenings have mostly been better although Flat Rocks performed best in the morning. Graeme Maunder enjoyed a great evening’s fishing in calm conditions at Nine Mile, catching plenty of tailor and small but fun eagle rays, all released as were most of the tailor. The tailor reacted to both baits and lures, especially poppers. At Second Point at Greenough, reasonable-sized pike were biting in the early evening, tailor moving in on dark. Large herring have been reported from all along the coast.

Michael Triantopoulos found metal spinners excellent tailor takers from the shore at Drummonds, but numbers have dropped off there. He is now using his dinghy to fish only about 150m from shore at Drummonds to catch herring and pike. A couple of cobia, one 70cm, the other 90cm, were caught at Drummonds.

A couple of Queensland school mackerel were landed at Southgates, and there’s the occasional mulloway about, one weighed 18.5kg gilled and gutted. Whiting catches are inconsistent, both yellowfin and school whiting present at times, Separation Point, Point Moore, Explosives Jetty and behind the Live Cray Factory all okay for whiting. Try the Fishermans Harbour for crabs a couple of hours before and during a rising tide.

EXMOUTH

There's a new Exmouth newsletter on the site today, with a trio of pics including another hefty GT for Jeni.

Wembley chiropractor Jonathon Langer joined his brother Adam at Exmouth, the pair enjoying some great fishing from Adam’s boat despite strong winds, although one day was beautifully calm. Spanish mackerel were caught, as were good spangled and red throat emperor, rankin cod and many tuna, Jonathon’s highlight a 45 minute tussle with a powerful tuna.
