Bluewater Tackle World News for December 4th

Our apologies for failing to get our regular newsletter to you last week. That's the first one we've missed since we started doing them over two years ago, and it was due

to a combined effort of having a few people off on holidays, a ton of stock coming in, and both our internet service provider and our hosting provider having separate catastrophes over a two-day period. So we couldn't get it done. Also our apologies if we missed any emails during the last week - we definitely lost some communications along the way. If you're waiting on an answer for anything, please re-send the email; we may have never received the original.

Congratulations and commisserations amongst the staff this week. Nick from the Melville store and Matt from the Exmouth store both attended separate family funerals far from home, and have our condolences.

On the congratulations side, Joff from the Scarborough store married Kathryn last Saturday, and still managed to go fishing twice on the day; though at least he didn't put the boat in the water. It was a perfect weather day with friends, and they've now had a week down south which, we expect, included a little more fishing. Congratulations Joff and Kat!

Josh from the Scarborough store has been fishing Quobba for the last week and should have some good stories when he's back at work on Saturday.

You may still have time to do a last-minute registration for the Pink Fly Fishing Clinic at Point Walter, Saturday 6 December 2008, if it suits you.

The Pink Flyfishing Clinic is for women recovering from breast cancer. If you know of anyone who might be interested in attending, please forward this invitation on to them, and they may register on the Recfishwest site.

The Pink Flyfishing Clinic is a day of flyfishing and fun! Whether you are a beginner, or already have flyfishing skills, come along and enjoy yourself! Lisa Sharp and Alan Guthrie will be the hosts, with assistance from David Bell and other members from the Saltwater Flyrodders Association WA Inc.

Time is 9.30am to 11.30am, and refreshments and a light lunch will be provided after the clinic.
You need comfortable clothes, a hat, sneakers/sandals you don't mind getting wet, and sunglasses. If you have a pink shirt from the last year, feel free to wear it. Plenty of sunscreen will be made available on the day.

If you already have a fly rod you may choose to bring it along, otherwise rods, reels and tackle will all be provided on the day.

Here’s a preview of this weekend's Sunday Times fishing news, with a bit of extra stuff...

PERTH METROPOLITAN

Woodman Point has been turning up a few juvenile salmon, with whiting providing an alternative if the salmon don't show.  With a few bonito being caught by trolling just off shore, it would be a good idea to pursue these speedsters from the shore as well.

Large sand whiting are prolific on the outskirts of Rottnest Island, with bag limits being reached in no time at all. Around the Mewstones and the Stragglers there are king george whiting and a few tailor in the white water. Five Fathom Bank is a good place to berley up some decent sized pinkies, with a few large skippy thrown in for good measure.

North Cottesloe and Grant Street reef is a good place to look for herring and some decent sized skippy have been picked up near the reefs using whitebait on a small gang. Once the weather warms up this area should start producing some yellowfin whiting.

For the boaties out from Mindarie in 25-35m of water there are baldies, pinkies and dhufish. There are also a few king george whiting in the area. Recreational crayfishermen have come in with reports that the crays are finally making an appearance. For the shore based fishermen the northern beaches have turned up bull herring, the odd mulloway but the tailor are a bit patchy.

In the river the chopper tailor numbers have dwindled a little bit but are still definitely worth chasing with 15g slices being the lure of choice. A few flathead have been landed from Point Walter, and the shoreline near Jojo's Restaurant. Bream are widespread throughout the river but the majority of them are on the smallish side. Look near Canning Bridge for the bigger ones.

BUSSELTON

Plenty of squid in the bay along with good numbers of king george whiting.  Good numbers of crabs are also being caught.  Out at the end of the jetty there are some big sambos and for those who don't want to tangle with these brutes there are a few tailor and herring to be had. Tailor are being caught from both sides of the cape when weather permits.

GERALDTON

Morning fishing at Southgates has yielded tailor, herring and yellowfin whiting. Flat Rocks is worth a try for tailor and small mulloway to 80cm. Bigger tailor are being caught at Nine Mile. The tailor are hit and miss at Drummonds Cove, but there are heaps of pike, and the herring that are there are a good size.  The breakwater is a good place to fish for whiting and a few smallish skippy. The dinghy fishermen have been doing very well on squid and pike. The pike are taking either trolled lures or you can cast out whitebait or small mulies on gangs.

EXMOUTH

Marlin are being caught on the west side and the sailfish inside the gulf. Trolling for mackerel has been very productive. Learmonth jetty has been the hot spot for golden trevally, and the bream and whiting are about in the marina and the local beaches. For those who like to walk the shore with a backpack full of soft plastics, the spangled emperor have been a worthwhile target with quite a few being landed.
